Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical

Malvern Theatres

*****

Come all you no-hopers, you jokers and rogues at Malvern Theatres this week and steer a course for Port Isaac where the Cornish ‘Buoy Band’ Fisherman’s Friends sail the stormy seas and warm your cockles with a sense of community as they sing their hearts out and reach for the stars. Who doesn’t love a good sea shanty?

These loveable rogues will get your feet tapping but don’t cross them as they may just shave your belly with a rusty razor or make you walk the plank. We delve into the depths of the true story about an a cappella group from the coast of Cornwall who signed a record deal in 1995 and made it to perform at Glastonbury Festival, yes a true story captured by writer Amanda Whittington and by screenwriters Nick Moorcroft, Meg Leonard and Piers Ashworth.

The heart of this collective can be found at the local Inn, where lager is frowned upon and don’t even ask where they would like to stick a Bishop’s Finger? Danny, Jason Langley, stumbles across a Tribute or two falling for a singing mermaid who captures that twinkle in the tourist’s eye, in the shape of Alywyn, Parisa Shahmir, and what a voice.

Brimming with joyous, infectious, enthusiasm for family and traditions, the whole cast from Jim, James Caddas to Archie, Hadrian Delacey, Leadville, Pete Gallagher and Sally, Hazel Monaghan to the rest of the incredibly talented crew and a set, designed by Lucy Osborne, to keep you afloat during tragedy and the live musicians dancing their way through the storms and the breaks.

This Musical will snag at your heart strings and leave you hungry for more crabs.

So, what shall we do with a drunken sailor? John, Kanaka-naka, too-rye-ay.

Cast your nets wide this week and haul yourselves to Malvern Theatre to catch Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical until Saturday March 25th, with tickets costing from £16.80. For more information visit malvern-theatres.co.uk or call the box office on 01684 892277, be quick though as many of the performances are already sold out.
