Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical

Malvern Theatres

****

Join the flamboyant cast of Cruel Intentions The 90s Musical at Malvern Theatres this week, for a stirring rendition of TLC, REM, NSYNC with some Garbage thrown in, as a bittersweet symphony unravels reputations with a pinch of zigazig ha.

“Slam your body down and wind it all around” as depraved step-siblings racy Kathryn Merteuil, (Nic Myers) and cheeky Sebastian Valmont, (Will Callan), concoct an evil plan to exact revenge and shatter the innocence of anyone in the destructive passion path.

Based on a modern-day take of the 1782 French novel Les Liasons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, the 1999 film Cruel Intentions starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe which then evolved into the jukebox musical we see now. The soundtrack perfectly portrays the hilarity of the conquests from ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ to ‘No Scrubs’ (one of my personal favourites) and ‘Losing My Religion’.

The innocent debutante, Cecile Calwell, (Lucy Carter), sets tongues wagging as Sebastian has his wicked way replacing the pink cello between her legs, but his sights are set on corrupting the new headmaster’s daughter Annette Hargrove, (Abbie Budden) but she’s ‘Just a Girl’.

Fabulous chemistry by Blaine Tuttle, (Luke Conner Hall), and Grey McConnell, (Joe Simmons), as they perform ‘Bye Bye Bye’ and the tongue in cheek humour leaves the audience smiling, laughing and singing along to the 90s party that jiggles and giggles across the stage.

The ascending orgasmic crescendo does come crashing down eventually with lots of ins and outs and ups and downs as consequences catch up but not before a Mrs Bunny Caldwell, (Gabriella Williams), has it out with Ronald Clifford, (Kevin Yates), as he tries to get another string to his bow. Although it’s no Heathers: The Musical, this is a lot of fun and one of the better jukebox musicals out there.

For a lighthearted slice of the 90s with plenty of romps throughout, shake those bangs and belt out ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ with the Cruel Intentions 90s Musical at Malvern Theatres until Saturday 3rd May. Tickets are still available from the Abox office on 01684 892277 or check out the website.
